The difference between intending to cycle to work and actually doing it is often decided the previous evening. Many commuters already want to ride. Coping plans are designed for exactly this moment. Instead of hoping motivation survives every obstacle, they pre-decide what happens when predictable barriers appear.

The If-Then Plan That Saves the Ride
A night-before coping plan is usually written as an if–then statement:
- If it is raining in the morning, then I will wear my waterproof jacket and ride the usual route.
- If I wake up feeling tired, then I will ride at an easier pace rather than drive.
- If I am running ten minutes late, then I will take the shorter route instead of abandoning the ride.
- If my front light battery is low, then I will use the charged backup light stored in my pannier.
The mechanism matters. A barrier no longer requires a fresh decision. The response has already been chosen. Matching Common Commute Barriers to Responses
The most effective coping plans target barriers that are both predictable and personally relevant.
Rain

“I’ll decide tomorrow whether the weather is too bad.”
A stronger coping plan is:
“If rain is forecast, then I will pack waterproofs tonight and ride unless severe weather warnings are issued.”
The key is that rain triggers preparation, not reconsideration.
Tiredness
Many commuters abandon a planned ride because they assume cycling requires a high-effort workout.
A useful coping plan is:
“If I feel tired in the morning, then I will ride slowly and treat the journey as transport, not training.”
This preserves the behaviour while reducing the perceived cost.
Darkness
Short winter days create practical concerns about visibility and safety.
Instead of:
“I’ll check my lights in the morning.”
Use:
“If I expect to return home after dark, then both lights will be charged and attached before I go to bed.”
The response removes a common source of last-minute friction.
Time Pressure
Time pressure often creates an all-or-nothing decision.
A coping plan can create a middle option:
“If I am running late, then I will take the direct route and skip the café stop.”
The ride survives because the adjustment was planned in advance.
Minor Equipment Problems
Many missed rides begin with a surprisingly small problem: a misplaced lock key, an empty light battery or a missing work pass.
A practical coping plan is:
“If a key item is missing, then I will use the backup stored permanently in my commute bag.”
The aim is not perfection. It is resilience.
Why Coping Plans Work Better Than Motivation
Motivation fluctuates. Morning conditions are often the worst possible moment to negotiate with yourself.
Implementation-intention research suggests that specifying a cue and a response increases the likelihood that the response is enacted automatically when the cue appears. For many commuters, Sunday evening and Wednesday evening work well because they naturally divide the working week.
A Sunday routine might include:
- Checking the week’s weather.
- Charging lights and devices.
- Confirming which days are cycling days.
- Packing backup clothing and waterproof gear.
- Reviewing likely obstacles.
A Wednesday routine performs the same function for the second half of the week.

The strongest coping plans share three characteristics.
They are specific.
“Ride unless it is impossible” is vague. “If light rain is forecast, I will use waterproofs” is actionable.
They assume obstacles will occur.
