Why walking partners beat willpower alone

A walking partner works best when the shared time and route lower the effort of starting, rather than turning exercise into a test of discipline.

Introduction

Many self-improvement goals fail not because they are too ambitious, but because they do not truly belong to the person pursuing them. Research on self-concordance suggests that the fit between a goal and a person’s interests, values and sense of identity is a powerful predictor of whether effort will continue when motivation fades. Goals that feel self-endorsed tend to attract more persistence, better progress and higher rates of attainment than goals pursued mainly because of pressure, guilt, status or external expectations. Walking partners illustration 1 This idea matters because many popular self-improvement targets—career milestones, fitness ambitions, productivity systems or lifestyle upgrades—can be pursued for very different reasons. Two people may chase the same outcome, yet the one whose goal reflects a genuine personal commitment is more likely to keep going when the process becomes difficult. The evidence suggests that goal quality is not just about what you pursue, but why you pursue it. The goal-fit test that predicts persistence

What self-concordance means in everyday language

Self-concordance refers to the degree to which a goal reflects a person’s authentic interests, deeply held values and developing identity. The concept emerged from research within Self-Determination Theory and was formalised by psychologists Kennon Sheldon and Andrew Elliot. In their model, a self-concordant goal is one that feels personally chosen rather than imposed. In everyday life, the distinction often appears in the reasons people give for the same objective:

  • “I want to become a doctor because helping people and solving difficult problems matter to me.”
  • “I want to become a doctor because my family expects it.”

Both goals may produce effort initially. However, the first reflects personal endorsement, while the second depends more heavily on external pressure.

The key point is that self-concordance is not the same as immediate enjoyment. Many self-concordant goals involve difficult, repetitive or uncomfortable work. The difference is that the person recognises the effort as serving something they genuinely care about. Why the target matters less than the reason

People often assume that persistence depends mainly on selecting the right target: the ideal career, exercise plan or financial goal. Self-concordance research suggests that the motivational source behind the target may be equally important.

A marathon, a university degree or a business project can all be self-concordant or non-self-concordant. The same outcome can either express a person’s values or represent an attempt to satisfy someone else’s expectations. What predicts persistence is frequently the quality of the connection between the goal and the self, not merely the goal category itself. Why aligned goals invite more sustained effort

The most influential evidence comes from longitudinal studies that tracked people over time rather than measuring motivation at a single moment. Sheldon and Elliot found that individuals pursuing self-concordant goals invested more sustained effort in those goals and were therefore more likely to attain them. Goal attainment then contributed to greater psychological need satisfaction and wellbeing. [PubMed]pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.govSecond, those whoPubMedGoal striving, need satisfaction, and longitudinal well-being - PubMedFirst, those pursuing self-concordant goals put more sustaine…

This finding is important because it identifies effort as a mechanism rather than a coincidence. Self-concordant goals do not succeed merely because they are easier. They succeed partly because people continue working on them for longer. [PubMed]pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.govSecond, those whoPubMedGoal striving, need satisfaction, and longitudinal well-being - PubMedFirst, those pursuing self-concordant goals put more sustaine…

Several processes appear to support this persistence:

Setbacks feel less threatening. When a goal expresses a personal value, failure is often interpreted as information rather than as proof of inadequacy. The individual has a reason to return after mistakes.

Effort feels more meaningful. Difficult actions become easier to justify when they connect to a valued identity. Studying late, exercising regularly or practising a skill can be experienced as investment rather than punishment.

Motivation renews itself. External rewards and pressures often require constant reinforcement. Self-concordant goals generate internal reasons for continued engagement, reducing dependence on outside incentives. Some goals feel easier—and that matters

An interesting development in the literature is the suggestion that self-concordant goals may not succeed solely because people force themselves to work harder. Some studies indicate that such goals can feel subjectively easier to pursue.

Research examining goal progress found that people often experience self-concordant goals as less effortful relative to their other goals. The benefit appears to come partly from reduced internal resistance rather than from sheer willpower. This helps explain a common observation in self-improvement. Someone may appear highly disciplined in one area while repeatedly struggling in another. The difference is not always character strength. Sometimes one goal is closely aligned with personal identity while the other is maintained mainly through obligation.

That does not mean self-concordant goals are easy. They still require sacrifice, delayed gratification and resilience. The distinction is that the person spends less energy arguing with themselves about whether the effort is worthwhile. Questions that reveal borrowed goals

Many goals are partially borrowed from family, peers, employers, social media or cultural expectations. Borrowed goals are not automatically bad, but problems arise when people pursue them without examining whether they genuinely fit.

The following questions can help identify low-concordance goals:

If nobody could see this achievement, would I still want it?

Status-driven goals often lose much of their appeal when recognition is removed. A goal that remains meaningful without an audience is more likely to be self-concordant.

Which value does this goal express?

A goal connected to growth, creativity, contribution, mastery, health or relationships usually has a clearer personal foundation than one driven only by comparison.

Would I recommend this goal to someone exactly like me?

This question shifts attention from social expectations to personal fit.

Am I pursuing the outcome or the approval attached to the outcome?

Many people discover that what they actually want is acceptance, admiration or relief from criticism. Recognising this distinction can prevent years of effort directed at the wrong target.

Does this goal sound like my own voice?

Goals framed as “I should”, “I must” or “people expect me to” often deserve closer examination. Such language does not prove a goal is wrong, but it can indicate external regulation rather than personal endorsement. [PMC]pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.govthe quality of people's reasons for their goal pursuits… [NCDA]ncda.orgshow detailAligning Strengths with Goals: Creating a Self-Concordant…1 Mar 2012 — They define self-concordance as the extent to which people purs…

Better alternatives when a goal feels borrowed

The solution is not necessarily to abandon the goal. Sometimes a person can reconnect it to a more authentic reason.

For example:

  • Instead of “I need to get fit so people find me attractive”, the goal may become “I want the energy and physical capability to live the life I value.”
  • Instead of “I have to earn a promotion to prove myself”, it may become “I want greater responsibility because I enjoy solving larger problems.”
  • Instead of “I should learn this skill because everyone else is doing it”, it may become “This skill supports the kind of work I want to create.”

Notice that the external outcome may remain identical. What changes is the motivational foundation.

Research on self-concordance does not claim that every worthwhile goal must originate from pure intrinsic enjoyment. Many important goals begin as external expectations. The crucial factor is whether people eventually internalise and endorse the goal as their own. What the evidence means for self-improvement that works

The practical lesson is that persistence is not only a matter of discipline. It is also a matter of alignment. People often search for stronger habits, tougher routines or better productivity systems when the deeper issue is that the goal itself has never been fully accepted as part of who they are.

The self-concordance literature consistently points in the same direction: goals aligned with personal interests, values and identity attract more sustained effort, produce greater progress and are more likely to enhance wellbeing when achieved. In self-improvement, one of the most useful questions is therefore not “How can I push harder?” but “How much does this goal genuinely fit the person I want to become?” [ISSEP]issep.orgOptimizing free will: Goal self-concordance and goal breakthrough…August 12, 2025 — According to the original self-concordance model (…Published: August 12, 2025 [PubMed]pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.govSecond, those whoPubMedGoal striving, need satisfaction, and longitudinal well-being - PubMedFirst, those pursuing self-concordant goals put more sustaine… [Self-Determination Theory]positivepsychology.comself determination theoryand How It Explains MotivationJun 21, 2018 — Deci and Ryan's Self-Determination Theory (SDT) identifies autonomy, relatedness, and compet…
