Introduction

Many self-improvement goals fail not because they are too ambitious, but because they never truly belonged to the person pursuing them. Research on self-concordance suggests that the fit between a goal and the self is a powerful predictor of whether effort will continue when enthusiasm fades. A self-concordant goal is one that reflects a person’s genuine interests, values, and developing identity rather than external pressure, status competition, guilt, or obligation. Studies consistently find that people invest more sustained effort in such goals, make greater progress, and are more likely to achieve them. The implication is practical: before asking whether a goal is challenging enough, it is worth asking whether it is genuinely yours. The Goal-Fit Test That Predicts Persistence

Self-concordance was developed within the broader framework of self-determination theory to explain why some goals attract long-term commitment while others quickly lose momentum. The central idea is simple: people are more persistent when their goals express who they are rather than who they think they should be. [Self-Determination Theory]selfdeterminationtheory.org1999 SheldonElliotSelf-Determination TheoryGoal striving, need satisfaction, and longitudinal well-beingby KM Sheldon · 1999 · Cited by 4392 — The first ob…

A goal can look impressive on paper and still be poorly aligned with the person pursuing it. Consider two people training for a marathon:

  • One runs because endurance, challenge, and personal growth matter deeply to them.
  • The other runs mainly to gain approval, impress colleagues, or avoid feeling inadequate.

The behaviour may appear identical, but the motivational foundation differs. Self-concordance research predicts that the first person is more likely to maintain effort when training becomes inconvenient, uncomfortable, or slow to reward. [PMC]pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.govPMCSheldon K. M., Elliot A. J. (1999). Goal striving, need satisfaction, and longitudinal well-being: The self-concordance model. Journal…

This is why self-concordance focuses on reasons rather than targets. The question is not merely “What goal are you pursuing?” but “Why are you pursuing it?”

What Self-Concordance Means in Everyday Language

In everyday terms, a self-concordant goal feels personally meaningful even when it is difficult.

It does not require constant enjoyment. Someone may dislike studying for a professional qualification, physiotherapy exercises, or early-morning training sessions. The goal can still be self-concordant if the person sees it as an authentic expression of values they endorse. Self-concordance is about ownership, not pleasure. [PMC]pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.govPMCSheldon K. M., Elliot A. J. (1999). Goal striving, need satisfaction, and longitudinal well-being: The self-concordance model. Journal…

Researchers typically distinguish between goals pursued because of:

  • Genuine interest.
  • Personal importance or deeply held values.
  • Internal pressure such as guilt or shame.
  • External pressure such as rewards, expectations, or social approval.

The first two sources are considered more self-concordant because they are experienced as self-endorsed. The latter two involve varying degrees of pressure and tend to produce less durable motivation. [Self-Determination Theory]selfdeterminationtheory.org1999 SheldonElliotSelf-Determination TheoryGoal striving, need satisfaction, and longitudinal well-beingby KM Sheldon · 1999 · Cited by 4392 — The first ob…

A useful everyday test is whether a person can complete the sentence:

“Even if nobody else knew I achieved this, it would still matter to me.”

The easier that statement is to endorse, the more likely the goal is to be self-concordant.

Why Aligned Goals Invite More Sustained Effort

One of the most influential findings in this area comes from research by Kennon Sheldon and Andrew Elliot. Their self-concordance model proposed that goals aligned with personal interests and values generate greater sustained effort, which in turn increases the likelihood of attainment. The effect is not simply that aligned goals feel better; they produce behavioural consequences that matter over time. The mechanism appears to work through several pathways.

Setbacks Feel Less Threatening

People inevitably encounter obstacles. When a goal is self-concordant, setbacks are often interpreted as problems to solve rather than evidence that the goal should be abandoned.

A writer who genuinely values creative expression may view rejection as part of the process. Someone pursuing writing mainly for prestige may interpret the same rejection as proof that continuing is not worth the emotional cost.

Effort Feels More Voluntary

Self-concordant goals still require discipline, but the discipline feels chosen rather than imposed. This distinction matters because voluntary effort tends to generate less psychological resistance than effort experienced as coercion. [PMC]pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.govPMCSheldon K. M., Elliot A. J. (1999). Motivation Recovers More Easily

Many people assume persistence comes from maintaining high motivation at all times. Research suggests a different pattern. Those pursuing self-concordant goals are often better able to return after interruptions because the goal remains meaningful even when motivation temporarily dips. [PubMed]pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.govPubMedGoal striving, need satisfaction, and longitudinal well-beingby KM Sheldon · 1999 · Cited by 4392 — First, those pursuing self-conc…

Progress Feels More Natural

Later studies have suggested that self-concordant goals may not simply increase effort; they can also make pursuit feel easier and more natural. Individuals often report less friction and greater subjective ease when working toward goals that fit their identity and values. What the Evidence Actually Shows

The evidence supporting self-concordance is notable because it follows people over time rather than relying solely on one-off surveys.

In the foundational self-concordance studies, individuals who pursued goals consistent with their interests and values invested more sustained effort and achieved higher rates of goal attainment. Achievement then contributed to greater satisfaction of important psychological needs and improved well-being. Subsequent research extended these findings beyond student samples and into domains such as sport, work, and personal development. Studies of athletes, for example, found that autonomous goal motives predicted greater effort, which subsequently predicted goal attainment. Reviews of the self-concordance literature have generally reached similar conclusions: goals that reflect a person’s interests and core values are associated with stronger persistence, better progress, and more positive psychological outcomes. Importantly, this does not mean self-concordant goals guarantee success. Life circumstances, resources, health, and opportunity still matter. The evidence instead suggests that alignment increases the probability that effort will be sustained long enough for success to become possible.

Questions That Reveal Borrowed Goals

Many goals are inherited from family expectations, workplace culture, social media, or peer comparison. These goals can produce short-term motivation, but they often struggle to survive difficulty.

The following questions help identify whether a goal may be borrowed rather than self-concordant:

  • If nobody could see the outcome, would I still want it?
  • Am I pursuing this because it reflects my values, or because it improves my image?
  • Would I recommend this goal to someone I cared about if it brought no status benefits?
  • Do I feel energised when thinking about the process, or only about the recognition attached to success?
  • When I imagine achieving it, does the result feel satisfying or merely relieving?

A revealing sign is when success feels like the end of pressure rather than the fulfilment of a meaningful aspiration. Relief can indicate that the goal was largely driven by obligation.

Better Alternatives to Borrowed Goals

The solution is not necessarily to abandon a goal. Often the better move is to redesign it around a personally meaningful reason.

For example:

Borrowed versionMore self-concordant version”I need a promotion so people take me seriously.”“I want greater responsibility because I enjoy solving complex problems.”“I should exercise because I look out of shape.”“I want physical capacity and energy for the life I want to live.”“I need to read more because successful people do.”“I want to deepen expertise in subjects I genuinely care about.”“I must build a side business because everyone else is.”“I want to create something that reflects my interests and strengths.”

Notice that the objective may remain similar. What changes is the motivational foundation.

The Practical Lesson for Self-Improvement

Many self-improvement systems focus heavily on planning, tracking, accountability, and habit formation. These tools matter, but self-concordance research suggests they work best when attached to goals that already fit the person’s values and identity.

A useful sequence is:

  1. Identify the outcome you want.
  2. Examine why you want it.
  3. Remove motivations that depend entirely on pressure, comparison, or approval.
  4. Reconnect the goal to interests, values, strengths, or a desired identity.
  5. Build systems and habits around that more authentic version.

The result is not necessarily greater enthusiasm. It is something more valuable: a form of motivation that remains available after novelty disappears. Research on self-concordant goals suggests that this alignment with the self is one of the strongest predictors of whether effort will continue long enough to matter.
